Friday Devotional: Magnify the Lord

Oh, magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together!

 – Psalm 34:3

In Psalm 34:3 the Psalmist begins with an invitation to worship that is communal and compelling. Psalm 93 shifts the scene from invitation to foundation, the enthronement of God—he rules; his majesty surrounds the world; his faithfulness establishes the seas and the world. Together these texts move us from an active call to praise into confident submission to a reigning God. When we join voices to magnify the Lord, we do more than sing; we acknowledge that the One we praise is supreme over chaos, unshaken by storms, and worthy of our trust. This posture—public praise rooted in private confidence—shapes how we live, speak, and go about the work of mercy and mission.

The songs we sing together direct our hearts to complementary truths. Christ Be Magnified centers the life of the Christian around the Lord’s exaltation—our joys and sufferings point to his glory. Your Love, O Lord grounds worship in steady, pursuing love that sustains us. All Sufficient Merit reminds us our acceptance rests on Christ’s worth, not ours. ’Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus presses the personal, devotional habit of relying on Christ through uncertainty. Finally, Step by Step assures the worshipers of God’s accompanying presence in daily life. Together these songs teach that we praise a reigning Savior, rest in his love and merit, trust him in practice, and walk daily under his shepherding care.

Reflection Questions:

  1. How does communal praise strengthen your confidence in God’s rule when you face doubt or fear?
  2. Which of the songs named most helps you trust Christ’s presence this week, and what practical step will you take to live that trust?

Prayer: Lord Jesus, we join together to magnify your name. Teach us to praise you not only with singing but with lives shaped by your reign. Help us rest in your steadfast love and the merit of your work for us. When doubt presses in, remind us you walk step by step with us; when we are tempted to rely on ourselves, draw us back to trust. Use our worship to send us out as agents of your mercy. Amen.
